Hey guys, it's Emily from shimmer and spice. I took a day trip (that ended up being over night) to NYC yesterday to train with GIELLA custom blend cosmetics in the big city so I can take my skills back to s&s with me! GIELLA had gotten new glitter in so we could make the most extreme glitter nail polish. I must say, I love it!I literally do a double take when I look down at my hands. I move them around so I can watch them flash like disco balls :3

For fashion this season in both accessories and make-up, think 70's. Fresh, Natural, Free, Frosted

Must have products to get these looks:

Frosty eye shadows in cotton candy colors. This look may be a little difficult to pull off but this color is not. Just add to the inner corner of your eyes, a little on your lid close to the lash line or over a black eyeliner to really make your eyes stand out! Highlight that your can put on your cheekbones or on your eyelids alone or on top of any color.

B-DAZZLE (the lighter version of Eye M Glam)

Below is a pic I took after doing Makeup on a model for a shoot we did last year. B-dazzle gives the fresh face look and is also applied on her eye lids close to the lash line. I also put some in the inner corners of her eyes to freshen and look more awake!

This season nothing should look too planned out. A pop of color on the lip and a color like Dreamy Taupe which is the perfect color to provide depth to the eye lid when applied in the crease with out adding color. It is also perfect for filling in most people's brows.

Bronze is everywhere. Particularly a bronze with a sparkling affect to make the eyes glow. I created "Snookie" for this. Its pretty much my fav thing right now.

Looks super dreamy......

Apply on the lid close to lash line, add dreamy taupe in the crease and a thin line of black liner on the top lid and you have the look! ( a little B-Dazzle on the inner corners could never hurt)

I adore this make-up tutorial that Mario (Past GIELLA artist) did. It's my favorite look right now and of course he uses Eye-m Glam and B-dazzle all over the lid and cheek bones so I love it even more!

Watermelon lips! A perfect shade for spring. So lively and vibrant.

Israeli watermelon and feta snacks. So easy and so delicious and refreshing!

Love the styling in these shots.

Aaaand last but not least, watermelon margaritas... if you're working hard, you have to unwind somehow!

Ingredients

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
3 wide strips orange zest
12 ounces watermelon cubes (about 2 cups)
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
3/4 cup white or silver tequila
Lime wedges

Directions

In a small saucepan, bring sugar, water, and orange
zest to a boil over high. Reduce to a simmer and cook until sugar dissolves, 3 minutes. Let syrup cool
in a bowl. In a blender, puree watermelon cubes until
smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing on solids, into a pitcher (you should have about 1 cup juice). Stir in syrup, lime juice, and tequila. Fill salt-rimmed glasses with ice, then pour margarita mixture over top. Garnish with lime wedges.

Holiday make-up........ so fun.

Summer is all about natural, a little bronzer and some gloss and you're out the door... for the holidays we can glam it up!

Rouge lips? YES!

For miss D I usually keep it pretty basic. The girl has these huge aqua eyes and pouty lips, you don't need much! Yesterday I was feeling "baby doll" for her. Hotsy Totsy (yes thats the name of the gloss) lips, golden shimmery eyes and lots of mascara! All make-up used is GIELLA custom blend cosmetics.

Mixin' up a nice bronzy gold, but to really get that shimmery affect I went back over the shadow with a top coat of a champagne shimmer.

Fall make-up done right

Smokey Eye and Nude lip are always in and different variations work well for all complexions.

This season you see suddle hints of greys, golds, truffle and burnt orange mixed in with the traditional black. Always line the inner rim with black.

For a beautiful NUDE lip try a new color I just made for myself called DOE by GIELLA.

It's a very creamy lipstick, mine has peppermint and is almost identical to the lips in the first photo

Blush color PETAL

Bare eyes or eyes with a suddle hint of taupe eye shadow with a nude lip or a very bright pop of color on the lip. Reds are always big for the colder months. If you get the right one for your complexion it can wake up your whole face. This year we are seeing more firey orange tone red lipstick.

Try OPIUM by GIELLA

Finally my favorite look. (because it was done by me, haha) Merlot color lip with earthy brown eye shadow and a combo of bronzer for a contour and petal blush. Fill in the eyebrows and use a matte powder or concealor as a highlight almost in a boomerang shape under the eye and on the very top of the cheek bone.

Today is a beautiful energized Saturday, although I still feel like I need more coffee. Tomorrow is my first shimmer and spice home shopping party and Luisa will be manning the shop! I am extremely excited and I know it will be so much fun. Pictures will be posted soon enough!! After the party I'm off to NYC for my day at Bendels! Although it is exhausting I look forward to seeing what the new styles are at bendels so I can get them in the shop, as well as seeing my NYC loves!

On another note, I received gorgeous pictures from one of my brides I did make-up for! She is such a SWEET, CHARMING, EASY GOING woman I have to say this was honestly a complete pleasure from the trial to the wedding day. On the wedding day she first forgot her hair spray (which is kinda her thing), then her dress ripped, but NOTHING was going to bring her down! Congrats to you Dian!

Why hello there,

At this point I had been blogging more on a monthly basis then on the regular. I am going to make it part of my job to start up again, because it is :)

Ah life...

I've been loving it. What a great summer it had been, the shop it doing great and I have been able to see my friends more often. My friend Cari was just here with a great new business idea that she should of done YEARS ago. I will be blogging about this more when she finishes her website. It consist of styling wether it be your furniture, wardrobe or way of life. Actually we call it EDITING. She is great at that!

While she was here we were talking about how her mother back in Wisconsin is getting a couple chickens that lay BLUE eggs then selling organic, free range blue eggs. I'd buy them just so that every time I crack one open in the morning I get to see that color blue. Why are eggs so awesome and beautiful?

My first week in my new location.

I LOVE it there.

I love my neighborhood and the energy of my space. I feel really positive about the quality in my shop and think my prices are unbelievable. I think name brands are tacky (unless its Prada or Marc Jacobs) so I stay away, but I def stay with the trends. Everyone who had come into the store has found something they love and are able to afford. The only problem I am having is a lot of people walk by with out coming in to take a peak- which leaves me lonely.

Hopefully the word spreads and I have no more lonely days.

The first part of my dream has come true. I now own a boutique and it turned out exactly how I envisioned. Somehow I pulled this together with nothing saved up! Lots of help from friends, I couldn't of done it without them. Feels like a comfy home but still feels like a boutique and provides lots of shopping! The make-up center is set up like a little kitchen. Now lets hope the 2nd part of my dream comes true and people shop and I succeed! This is the scary part, I'm doing it all over again, AGAIN!

Directions: Apply the base color, and when it's dry, paint spots that vary in shape but stay in nearly consistent sizes. Once that layer is dry, use the pen and draw two oblong shapes along the side of each colored spot. Make sure one of the shapes is more like a circle, and the other is more like a "U". A mothers jobs is one if not the most important in the world.

My mom and I are completely different. I want to travel the world and she doesn't want to drive to the city, I love Anthropologie style and she wants black, white and mirrors everywhere!

There have been many times in my life I criticized her for not seeing things the way I have. I am tough on her, I think sometimes we are the toughest on the ones we know will love us the most no matter what. I wish I have always shown her the love I feel for her on the inside but I haven't. When I moved to NYC I called my mom to chat with her and I would think about how much I loved her everyday. Its easy to take something for granted until its not around. I always knew she had a huge heart but didn't realize how huge till the past couple of years. I know we have friends of the family that consider her their mom more then their own. Most of you know the story of Krista, a family friend she gave her heart too and basically had it broken. She has had a tough year, but always stays positive. A role model for all.

As for Krista, I feel sad for her because she is missing her first mothers day. I still have hope in my heart she can turn her life around for her adorable little boy.

So for those of us who need a holiday to makes us really appreciate all our mothers have done for us, make good use of it!

I've been spending a lot of time in Northern Liberties and it feels wonderful to be back in the city again. Philadelphia is much different then NYC but I welcome the difference. I still miss and adore New York, but I get city life with a more relaxed feel. I am still back and fourth for appointments and already I miss my Yardley clients but I hope I get lots of visits! This is the biggest gamble I have ever taken in my 26 years of life so I appreciate all the support I can get. As the saying goes, (which my boyfriend keeps reminding me) "with more risk, comes more rewards"

I woke today to the most beautiful blanket of snow. Couldn't drive to work so it's a snow day.

I hope all you lovely people in Pennsylvania stayed in and enjoyed the warmth and the beauty out your window.

Since you are trapped in the house, a snow day is the perfect day to do all the things you always want to do, but never have the time too. No excuses. For me it's, baking, crafting, painting, sleeping.

Got two out of 3! Sleeping and baking, ugh.. great for my gut ;)

I pulled out my little piece of New York City, my Magnolia Bakery cookbook that I received as a Christmas gift this year and decided on orange vanilla chip cookies.

Miss Cari is a friend of mine from NYC. I first met Cari because she did window display and visuals at Bendels. She was on the other end of things. While I was blending make-up, she was blending paint colors and fabrics. I always saw her running around with all the boys with a paintbrush in her hand and a mission on her face. When I needed a roomate Cari needed to move out so in she came with her piano, poems and love of LOVE. We met at the perfect time, we were both going through incedible changes and were unsure of our next step. She walked by me at work one day and said "I booked a trip to New Mexico to stay in this spiritual lady's library" I gave her my credit card and said "count me in" and off we went. On that trip everyone thought we were sisters and in a way we were. She and I left NYC at the same time with the same hopes and fears. She went to her home state of Wissconsin and I here. About a week ago she packed all her belongings, including her kitty and she left Wissconsin to come here too!

So welcome Miss Cari Jo to good ol' Philadelphia.

While she is here I used her as my MUSE. Cari is wearing all Kristyn April designs, including Make-up.

Although I always like my blog to be happy.....

I think it's time to tell the story of what my family has been dealing with while trying to go on with our lives.

Years ago in high school, my brother dated this girl for a year or two. She was always really attached to our family right from the start and even after they broke up and moved on she would write us letters, call, and stop in from time to time. She moved back from college and told my mom she was really upset. Her parents had divorced and she was not getting along with her father at all. Her finances were a wreck and she was just generally unhappy. My mom then offered that if her father was OK with it and she thought it would help their relationship, she could come live with us for a while and my dad would help her try to get her finances back on track. She ended up living in my room (I was living in NYC) but was never there, she was always at her boyfriends and not doing what she came to them for. My parents explained to her that this wasn't helping her at all and told her she should move back with her father.

A couple months later I get a call that all of my parents good jewelry had been stolen, including my moms original wedding ring that she had saved to give me one day (which I found out about because it had been taken). The cops thought it was Krista, I fought against the fact thinking she could never do that to our family. After the cops kept going to her boyfriend Mike's house where she was staying to question her, sure enough a couple months later my mom called me and told me Krista had gone to the police and confessed everything...including the fact that she had been stealing because she was addicted to Oxycontin and is pregnant. She had stolen from her father, her neighbor, a random house, and over $30,000 in jewelry as well as $600 from my little brother's safe in my parent's house.

No one was posting bail to get her out of jail so sure enough my mom bailed her out and got her in a halfway house so that she could detox and have the baby healthy. No one in her or Mikes family seemed to care about her or the baby so my mom drove her to and from doctors appointments and would even take her for burger king as a treat every time. She seemed to be doing really well in there and then a couple months later we got the call that she had been kicked out. She took one shot of liquor apparently because of peer pressure and they kicked her out. She had no where to go, no one would take her in and she had the baby. On top of everything, she had her sentencing coming up and although being in a halfway house was good for her case, getting kicked out of one obviously made it worse.

My parents decided they couldn't live with the baby and her going to a hotel so they decided to let them come live with us. She had been living with us and doing really well and her sentencing was right around the corner. My father and I wrote letters to the judge pleading to give Krista probation so she could be with her baby, Michael, and live with us. We were willing to give her a place if they decided for house arrest as well which meant changing our entire lifestyle. I was in tears in the court room, my parents were talking to the judge and my grandparents were in the front with me holding my hand. At this point I cared for Krista as a sister. I sort of wanted to punch her in the face for being so dumb so I was more emotional than I thought I would be. The judge was obviously confused about where her family was and why the people she had stolen from and violated were there to support her. After my father and mother pleaded with the judge we sat there in silence while he read all of the letters, each of which were two pages long. No one from her family was there. Her dad was really sick and her youngest sister lived in Florida. Her older sister did not want anything to do with her at that point and her mother...well she should have been there. The fact that her older sister wanted nothing to do with her I looked down upon then but now I wonder if she was just the only one who could see straight. The judge basically looked at her and said he did not believe that she was going to be better, that we were crazy but amazing people and that if she ended up in his court room again after all she was being given by us, he would make sure she goes away for a very, very long time. He gave her probation.

We went through a lot with her in the months that went by but things seemed good. Her dad was extremely sick and passed away in October but we talked about it a lot and she seemed strong about it. Then came December 2009. My brother, whose room was conjoined by a bathroom with hers (she was in my others brothers old room) was feeling strange, like things were not right and didn't add up. He felt she was manipulating and asking for things too much. For his piece of mind he decided to put $25 dollar bills in his safe and leave the key out. A couple days later he went back and there was $23. Then he checked again and there was $20. He decided to take things further. He set up his computer in his room so that it was motion sensor and would turn on and start recording if someone walked in. While we were at work, sure enough she and mike were in his room. She walked right over, picked up his key opened the safe and took what she needed.

Steve showed us the evidence and I confronted Krista. She lied at first but of course after I said I had her on camera, she confessed she had taken a couple dollars here and then but had planned on paying it right back. It was ridiculous that she thought it would be OK to pick up a key and open a safe and "borrow" even a dollar from the people she had snuck into their house and had done this too before, but she had a good argument. Her argument was that Steve had made her feel so comfortable in the time she lived there, saying if she ever needed anything just let him know. Well I guess its a stupid argument but we wanted to believe her. Don't get me wrong, I screamed at her till she was hysterical and my dad came home and basically screamed at her worse then he had ever yelled at me (and that's saying a lot). He kicked her out and then I started crying because I would miss her and especially Michael. He said, "My wife gave you her heart" along with some much more extreme harsh words. Eventually after things had calmed down, he decided to let her stay, mostly because of Michael and because he thought everyone else gave up on her. Of course at this time we all distanced ourselves from her a bit. I wasn't sure I could trust anything she said although she would plead to me that I could. We just didn't know how to feel.

On Friday morning, January 22 2010, my mom comes into my room while I'm laying in bed and says she has a bad feeling again. She had been noticing money here at there that seemed to be missing but she could never remember if she had misplaced it or what. She did the same tactic my brother did and put a 5 dollar bill into her desk drawer in the kitchen. The next day it was 3 dollar bills. My mom thought she wouldn't be silly enough to break a five and think no one would notice so she thought maybe one of us had needed a couple extra bucks and took it and threw in a couple singles. My dad had just bought a new ring and Friday morning she looked in the box and it was missing. She said she was "going to call dad first and see if he was wearing it but if not she would confront Krista." Sure enough he was not wearing it. He called and I had picked up the phone at the same time so I listened to his convo with her. It went something like this...

Dad: "Krista, did you take my ring?"

Krista: "No" (no emotion)

Dad: "Well I don't believe you so pack your bags, I want you out"

Krista: "OK" (again with no emotion)

She told my mom she had snuck Mike in one day while we were at work and that she thought he took it. He wasn't allowed in our house anymore after we caught them on camera together in my brothers room. I said to her "you have no emotion, if I thought my boyfriend had done something like that to the people who were housing me and caring for my child I would be screaming at him to get it back". She replied, "The reason I'm not calling him is because he's at work". Her parole officer had stopped by right at this time but because a lot was going on and she had to pack...she said she was going to go tell her she didn't feel well. She did and while she was doing that my mom snuck in her room to see if she could find anything that was stolen. She found a joint and brought it into my room saying "is this weed, it doesn't smell like weed" I said "ya, its just bad weed." When she went back into the room Mike was standing there. My mom asked him how he got into her house and he answered "I'm here to talk to Krista." My mom repeated the question and got the same response. After that she screamed the question and his answer was "she let me in the front door." In the mean time the parole officer had left and Krista came upstairs. I went into the room and she said she had been sneaking Mike in at night while we were asleep and they had been waiting for us to leave for work. He had been kicked out of his own home. "We know one of you has been stealing, wouldn't you like to get it off your conscience and admit it after all we've done for you" I said. Mike just sat there with his head down and Krista motioned at him as if to be telling me "he did it." I then stated "its people like you that make people in this world afraid to put their hearts out there and help anyone."

My mom asked Mike "do you really think you should still be in my house?" and he left. My dad was on his way home from work and told Krista to have Mike call him or he would call the cops. Mike called my dad and told him with no sound of regret that he had taken the ring, along with some other things including sentimental jewelry from me. My dad got home and decided he would call the cops. At this point Krista said it was all him and we were concerned about Mikey (the baby) and left Krista out of it. The cops came, they were already familiar with the case from the previous crime when she had stolen before. After the cops took Krista upstairs to question her the one cop came downstairs and told us everything was entirely different than we had thought. Krista came down crying to my mom "I'm still addicted, I've been taking oxy's again since my dad died and Mike had been giving them to me". My mom immediately started crying and I hugged onto Michael so tight, scared they would take him right then and put him in a foster home. They arrested Krista.

We told child services we wanted to foster him, we would even adopt him if they would let us. I love him as much as I can imagine loving my own kids and its just not fair. I had him from Friday till Monday. Krista would always be complaining how cranky he was and how she was so exhausted, and I always told her she had the perfect baby. He literally did not cry the entire time I had him! In those couple days I taught him how to wave bye, how to crawl (he would crawl once and then fall) got him on a perfect schedule, had him sleeping in his crib (which she had not) and start eating big people food (veggie burgers). The child services looked at our house and talked to us and said we could foster him if Mikes family doesn't pass. Monday they were going to look at the house and do background checks. I thought they would never OK it because Mike (Krista's boyfriend) doesn't even have a bed for himself. Six people live in this tiny apartment in the Muse. At least three that I know of had been drug addicts. The reason Krista got started was Mike's mom!! Michael doesn't even have a crib there, he sleeps in a portable crib. Moday they call us and say the house looks OK!!! That was shock enough but then they say his moms background check was negative but his sister and grandma were OK and that they would be coming to take him. An hour later, MIKE, his grandma, and his mother came and took Michael from me.

I don't understand the system.....

Is it if more people pass then don't pass background check??

Is it that the house just cant have rats infesting it??

Let me just point out that in all this time we had been paying for diapers, baby food, let her use his car if she needed it for the shopping or to take the baby to the doctors, let mike come over and hang out and play pool in our basement, watch movies, we even had a big family dinner where my dad invited all his kids and their significant others including Krista and Mike. My dad even gave my mom and I $100 to take her shopping and make her feel better about herself. My dad does not easily trust people. I always told him he needs to give people more of a chance and he would always tell me people will screw you but with Krista his heart was a little softer. I had put my heart into her and her child. I would ask her to write in a journal, buy her self help books, make her do activity's to better herself, take her out to lunch, sit and talk with her, cried with her when he dad was sick. Mike's family wouldn't even take the baby every other weekend saying to Krista "your living in the lap of luxury over there and I have 6 people living in a tiny space, I have no room for him." Krista would give them wipes and diapers and food and bottles and formula (that we bought) every time they would take him for a day or two and now they can all the sudden support him?????

The reason I have decided to put my personal life (and others) out there is because I am hoping that maybe this will get passed along and the right person might see it.

Michael needs a chance.

Dec 20th was my 26th birthday! I had a party the weekend before, got roses at work during the week and then kidnapped a couple friends during the snow storm this weekend. We cooked (well Tara cooked), played pictionary and watched movies all day while it snowed. Fraggles were part of this scenario.

Perfection.

The next day one of my friends from NYC who now lives in Wisconsin came in to Philly. I went downtown with Tara to meet her and we had a food tour.

My mom's best friend from high school came all the way from VA last minute with her daughter to celebrate with us. Its very hard to stay in contact with old friends and even harder when you do to find time to get together. On a very rare occasion when something like this occurs it is extremely special and totally worth noting. So here's to 38 years of friendship! Julianne and I take credit for this occasion. Today I got to rest. I have not been able to say that in way too long...

Ive been kept up most nights with this silly cough which I wouldn't mind saying goodbye to. Today I woke at 12:30 and went back to sleep again at 3:30. Woke around 7, just in time for dinner. There were tons of christmas movies on TV so I made a cup of hot cocoa and sat down with a blanket and ginger snap cookies and had the perfect winter evening.

I know the holidays are busy, but you should make a goal to do a couple holiday traditions and really take the time to enjoy them. Otherwise, what's the point?

Thankful.

I hope everyone take the time today to really actually sit and think of what the are thankful for. I feel like gratitude's are such an important part of life and being happy.

I am thankful for my family. They are just amazing.

I love my brothers more then anything. They have such distinct personalities and are both the greatest guys ever. They both picked nurses for girlfriends who are beautiful, fun and super giving. I've really enjoying becoming best friends with them since I've moved home. Jim makes me laugh so much and I can always sit and have the best conversation with Steve. Their friends are my extended family.

My parents are unbelievable and the greatest role models. They are so in love and so giving to each other and everyone else. They actually took betrayal from someone and turned it into a happy story. I always knew they were good people but I don't think I realized how gigantic their hearts were till this past year. (maybe one day Ill blog about that story)

I'm obsessed with my grandparents. No one in the whole world could be more caring then my grandfather and if there is someone else in this world like that I want to find him and marry him asap. My grandmother made my childhood like a fairytale. She is so much fun and just gets a kick out of everything. She always let me explore, and be creative no matter how big of a mess I made. People say I am an exact version of her and there could be no greater compliment.

The two newest people in my immediate family are Krista and her baby Michael. Krista is so much stronger then she knows. To fight addiction, take care of a child and deal with my obsessiveness with always trying to make people better and not punching me in the face. I'm her therapist she never asked for. I love all children but with him all I have to do is look at Michael and he never fails to give me this smile that literally makes everything ok. From the first time I held him I knew he was family.

My friends are unbelievable. To be able to have people that literally have seen the worst in you and choose to love you anyway is a great feeling. A family who has a choice, who picks you. All of my friends bring out something different in me. Sometimes you want to be with someone who knows your whole life story because they were there, no explanations necessary. Other times, I just need support and someone who has a good head on their shoulders for a good conversation. Most of the time I want to be with people who will make me laugh like I'm in high school and be able to loose my ego completely and just have fun. I'm lucky to have a friend who is like a brother to me, knows my whole family and everything about me. I REALLY feel like he is someone who has my best interest at heart and there is no other motives that could be possible to make it any other way. Not everyone is born into a great family but I truly hope that everyone gets to experience this type of love.

I suppose this ended up an incredible amount more cheesy then intended, but its THANKSGIVING! If you are someone who knows me and is reading this, you know that it is not at all generic. Everything stated about the people I love is right on, this is how blessed I am to have people like that in my life.
